Federal Solar Tax Credit Status
§25D Residential Clean Energy Credit — EXPIRED for new installations
The federal Residential Clean Energy Credit provided a 30% tax credit (no dollar cap) for solar, battery storage, wind, geothermal, and fuel cell property installed at U.S. residences. This credit expired on December 31, 2025 and is not available for any property placed in service after that date.
- If you installed solar in 2025: You can still claim the 30% credit when you file your 2025 tax return in 2026. IRS — Residential Clean Energy Credit →
- If you are planning a new installation in 2026 or later: There is currently no federal residential solar tax credit. State and local incentives may still be available (see table below).
- Commercial solar (ITC): The 30% federal Investment Tax Credit for commercial solar remains available under §48 of the Inflation Reduction Act. Consult a tax professional for commercial installations.
